"Die Glocke" in the Hanseatic city of Bremen, was one of Herbert von Karajan's favourite halls in Europe. Designed as early as 1737 on an octagonal floor plan, the location has been preserved in this form to this day and, despite several fires, offers one of the most beautiful acoustic experiences on the continent. On that evening in April 1961, Oscar Peterson sat down at his piano in front of almost 1,400 spectators, accompanied by his two companions, Ray Brown, the "handsome bassist", as his admirers call him, and Ed Thigpen, one of the most sought-after drummers on the New York scene. The trio gave an extraordinary concert that brought "The Lost Recordings" from the archives of the Bremer Rundfunk back to life and makes it available to us for the first time as an UltraHighQualityCD.
Oscar Peterson is a genius alchemist, a kind of Pygmalion of himself, who has always completed his transformations. As a master of swing, he knew how to deepen his repertoire and renew himself again and again – without denying himself. His legacy, the magical splendor he gave to jazz, will always remain unforgotten. Frédéric D'Oria-Nicolas, one of TLR's musical treasure hunters, tells of the enthusiasm he felt when he viewed the original tapes in the archives of Bremer Rundfunk: "On our first trip, we found more than eight tapes, including this wonderful recording of the Oscar Peterson Trio in the Glocke. This concert was given in 1961. But on this evening, a completely different trio performed! We were completely enchanted and "My Funny Valentine" is one of the most irresistible versions we've ever heard."
In order to transport the warmth, all the colors and the dynamics on this UHQCD, several weeks of intensive restoration work of the original tapes were necessary. "The Lost Recordings" is celebrated worldwide for the preservation of priceless musical heritage and the unsurpassed quality of its Phoenix mastering™ restorations. "Oscar Peterson Trio – Live In Bremen 1961" is also an audiophile revelation that proves how fantastic stereophonic mono recordings can sound!
UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. UHQCDs, unlike conventional CDs, are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. To protect the softer photopolymer from scratching, another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied. The combination results in a significantly reduced reflection of the laser light inside the CD and an unrivalled precise edge transition between pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with normal CD players. Musically, the result is a sound that is strongly reminiscent of analog master tapes.
