In May 2022, the team of The Lost Recordings found golden recordings of historical value in the archive of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB): Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Lucia Di Lammermoor" in a magnificent cast, consisting of Maria Callas, Guiseppe di Stefano and Rolando Panerai, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. Recorded on 29 September 1955 at the Städtische Oper Berlin, Callas shines as the technically brilliant and imaginative Lucia, and you get a vivid sense of what it must be like to see her live in the concert hall. She will be accompanied by the RIAS Symphony Orchestra and the Coro del Teatro alla Scala, Milan.
Painstakingly restored over several months, the recordings have a sound quality that surpasses previous releases and represents the most authentic rendition of this historic performance. In 2023, Maria Callas would have turned 100 years old; thus, this special publication is a worthy monument to her in the anniversary year. Supported by the Callas Foundation, the double UHQCD is accompanied by a booklet with atmospheric pictures and texts on 80 pages.
UHQCD stands for Ultimate High Quality Compact Disc and is a joint development of the Japanese CD replication company Memory-Tech and the Audio Quality CD Company from Hong Kong. Unlike conventional CDs, UHQCDs are not pressed from polycarbonate, but cast from a photopolymer and cured with UV light. To protect the softer photopolymer from scratches, another layer of high-purity polycarbonate is applied. The combination results in a significantly reduced reflection of the laser light inside the CD and an unrivalled precise edge transition between the pits and lands of the CD. UHQCDs are 100% compatible with normal CD players. Musically, the sound is strongly reminiscent of analogue master tapes.
