Harry Belafonte returned to Carnegie Hall on May 2, 1960 for what was though to be one of the last concerts in the venue's final season. Luckily that wasn't the case. For this concert, Belafonte shared the spotlight with up-and-coming folk performers, something that would become a concert tradition for him. Representing these performers were the Chad Mitchell Trio, Miriam Makeba, Odetta, and the Belafonte Folk Singers.
On May 2, 1960, Harry Belafonte returned to New York's Carnegie Hall – just one year after his legendary recording at the same venue. For this concert, he shared the spotlight with the up-and-coming Chad Mitchell Trio, South African singer Miriam Makeba and folk/blues singer Odetta, all of whom could easily keep up with the big star. Odetta's medley of I've Been Driving on Bald Mountain and Water Boy, her exciting Ox Drivers song, Makeba's duet with Belafonte, One More Dance, and the Chad Mitchell Trio's exuberant interpretation of Vaichazkem are highlights of the album. Of course, the humor doesn't fade by the wayside either, and Belafonte's duet with Odetta on A Hole in the Bucket leads to a broad grin.
This CD is part of a series of Sony Music K2 HD productions, which were produced at the instigation of the national company in Hong Kong. Sony Music in Hong Kong takes First Impression Music as a model, who succeed in selling their recordings at high prices in Hong Kong, which is notoriously infected by product piracy. That's why Hakamata Takeshi, who is also responsible for FIM productions as a mastering engineer, has had some enormously popular productions reworked by the JVC FLAIR Studio in Tokyo. The K2 HDs are made in Japan and come in a beautifully designed hardcover booklet in a protective slipcase with the K2HD logo. As with FIM, the CDs themselves are also protected in a fleece sleeve.
Attention: These CDs are actually remastered (K2 HD Mastering) and should not be confused with CDs available in Japan that have only been transcoded (K2 HD Coding).
