Schubert's "Unfinished" was formerly considered his 8th symphony and was accordingly named as such on the present album cover. According to the current state of research, however, it can be classified as his 7th Symphony. The Symphony in B minor, D 759 was written in 1822 and to this day it is disputed in musicology why Schubert did not complete it. The work was initially forgotten until it was found by the conductor Johann von Herbeck in 1865 and then premiered in the Redouten halls of the Vienna Hofburg. The present recording is also from Vienna, but from 1978. The Vienna Philharmonic will play under the direction of Carlos Kleiber in the Great Hall of the Musikverein.
