Originally released in 1977, Billy Joel's fifth studio album, The Stranger, was his breakthrough and marked the first of a series of highly successful collaborations with producer Phil Ramone, whose mastery of the recording studio provided a sublime sonic context for Joel's timeless songs and classic performances. The Stranger went on to become one of the top-selling albums of that year, peaking at No. 2 on the charts.
With the album "The Stranger", released in 1977, Billy Joel made his long-awaited breakthrough. Phil Ramone, who worked with Simon & Garfunkel, among others, produced the LP and helped Joel turn his already flawless arrangements and poignant lyrics into real hits. None of his previous ballads hit the heart as much as 'Just The Way You Are', for which he was awarded the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1979. The album itself, which is ranked 67th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 best records of all time, also received a Grammy.
Joel's voice is full of bittersweet longing, exuberance and a commitment to the working class that could have come from Bruce Springsteen. With great dynamism, he draws rich details in vivid colors and makes wistful feelings audible. Somewhat less subtle, however, was the lyrics to 'Only The Good Die Young', in which a boy tries to seduce his Catholic girlfriend. Although she retains her innocence in the end, the song was banned from the program by many US radio stations as 'anti-Catholic'. However, this ban attracted even more attention, as Joel reported in 2008: 'The minute they banned it, the album started shooting up the charts.'
It won two Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Just The Way You Are," was nominated for Album of the Year, and generated four indelible singles: "Just The Way You Are," "Only The Good Die Young," "She's Always A Woman," and "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)," which have all gone on to become absolute classics.
