Coltrane's and Dolphy's recordings of their evenings at "The Village Gate" nightclub in 1961 were not originally intended for release, but as equipment tests by the young sound engineer Richard Alderson, who later made a name for himself as an engineer for Nina Simone and Bob Dylan. The tapes slept unnoticed for several decades in the archives of the "New York Public Library for Performing Arts" before they were rediscovered and published there.
In the quintet with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Elvin Jones, eighty great minutes have been recorded, including the only known live recording of Coltrane's "Africa" or Dolphy's powerful bass clarinet in "When Lights Are Low".
This title is a SHM-SACD. This format is the further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly light-transparent plastic (Super High Material). It achieves a significantly better readability of the pit-land structures on the surface than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM-SACDs are generally re-digitized from the master tapes of the albums to DSD without any changes. SHM-SACDs can be played on any SACD player. Please do not use L'Art du Son or alcohol-based cleaning products. – Attention: All tracks are designed by Universal Music as limited edition collectibles for the Japanese market.
