The Hunter was released 5 years after her breakthrough with 'Famous Blue Raincoat'. It is a varied affair with several songs given by Todd Rundgren, Donald Fagen and mentor Leonard Cohen (who puts in another guest appearance) as well as self penned material. It's the voice that matters, and hers is crystalline.
Mastered by Bernie Grundman from Jennifer’s own 16/48 DAT master and produced by Elliot Scheiner, The Hunter, like Famous Blue Raincoat, enjoys masterful recording technique. Comes packaged in a deluxe book-style casing.
"Her voice is like the weather in California, rich in sunshine. But there is an earthquake behind it." This is what Leonard Cohen said about Jennifer Warnes and this album is yet another testament to how accurate that statement was. The remastering on 24 Karat Gold CD is sonically a big step towards even more dynamics and yet more calm in the sound.
The music does not play for the voice of the Warnes, but rather your outstanding voice is another instrument that plays perfectly coordinated with the rest. You will stroll along with the individual titles on a journey between guitar, bass and gang and dive deep into the world of konga, talking drum and Celtic tambourine.
Chris Bellman from Grundman Mastering is responsible for the remastering and had really good source material available with Bernie Grundman's first mastering in 1992. The raw data comes from the master tape from the personal possession of Jennifer Warnes. Also this recording is not perfect and the connoisseur even recognizes the weaknesses of Mrs. Warnes' microphone, but if we had more recordings like this, then nobody on this planet would think of listening to MP3.
[This title has also been released by Sony Music Hong Kong as a K2HD mastering title, but it does not come close to the sound of the Gold CD. For the FLAIR Mastering Center in Japan, only a digital tape copy was available, while Impex was allowed to work with the original tapes from the private collection of Jennifer Warnes.]
