Donny Hathaway's oeuvre spans just three years and five records. The composer, arranger and singer, who suffered from depression, was a master of the second row. He produced on Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label, wrote soundtracks, worked with King Curtis, Leroy Hutson and even Willie Nelson, landed a few medium hits, sounded like the interface between Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder – damn good. None of this made him happy; in January 1979, the unstable artist was found dead in front of his hotel.
With only one exception, his second album consists of cover versions, one of soul's most pop-savvy artists interpreting contemporary hits such as "A Song For You", "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and (most effectively) "Put Your Hand In The Hand", a relaxed yet driving gospel choir version of the song he was born to do. In contrast to his debut album, Donny Hathaway is rather dark, most of the songs are slow laments, accompanied by the piano, powerfully performed. The up-tempo song "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" and the gospel piece "Little Girl" with a great male choir in the chorus set counterpoints.
To this day, Donny Hathaway lives on not only in his often covered songs, but also as a great inspiration for future generations between soul and R&B.
