"Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul" (often referred to simply as "Otis Blue") is the third studio album by American soul singer and songwriter Otis Redding. It was first released on September 15, 1965 as an LP on the Stax Records subsidiary label Volt.
Otis Redding's third album showed: His talent was unbridled, his direction clear and his self-confidence strengthened. More than a quarter of the album consists of Redding's versions of songs by his idol Sam Cooke, who died the previous December, and all three are worth owning and listening to, AllMusic writes. Two of them, "A Change Is going to Come" and "Shake," are as essential as any soul recording ever made, and while they (and much of the album) have resurfaced on several anthologies, it's useful to hear the songs from those sessions in context, along with "Wonderful World," which rarely appears on other samplers.
Redding's captivating renditions of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (a song that embodies the perfect Stax/Volt sound and was originally written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as a tribute to and imitation of Redding's style), "My Girl" and "You Don't Miss Your Water" can also be heard. With "Respect" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long", the album also contains two original compositions that were to play an important role in his career. The former became very popular through Aretha Franklin, the latter immediately became a soul classic. Among the rarely mentioned gems is a rendition of B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby," in which the singer shares the spotlight with Steve Cropper, whose playing is alternately elegant and fiery, while the trumpets of Wayne Jackson and Gene "Bowlegs" Miller and the saxophones of Andrew Love and Floyd Newman provide support. Redding's powerful and remarkable vocals make Otis Blue dark, rich, and painfully alive, making it an essential listening experience.
