In April 2023, British singer Fink went into the studio with LowSwing Records producer Guy Sternberg to record what later became known as "The LowSwing Sessions". As Fink later wrote: "The session was the catalyst of musical longing... a few days in a real recording studio with a few friends, stellar session musicians, and nothing to think about except singing and playing."
The "stellar" musicians Fink is talking about are some of the world's best musicians today: Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie's bassist in Black Star), drummer Earl Harvin (Seal, Jeff Beck), Thomas Moked Blum (Patricia Kaas), Haggai Cohen-Milo, and Doron Segal. During the two-day session, Fink and the band recorded some of Fink's favorite Bowie and The Smiths songs, some of Guy's favorites from Soundgarden and Little Feat, and some of Fink's own classics.
The album was recorded and mixed in one of Berlin's oldest studios, the Tritonus, where Nick Cave, Erasure, Element of Crime and many others have also made their records. The recordings were made on a 2-inch 24-track Studer A827 and mixed on a Studer A80 1/2-inch machine at 30ips. Later, the record was mastered and cut to varnish by George Martin at the legendary "AIR Studios" in London.
"Fink - The LowSwing Session" is only available on vinyl. Limited to 1,000 copies, the "Deluxe" edition will be released in a gatefold cover, pressed on two 45 rpm discs by Optimal Media GmbH. The album was created in collaboration with Brinkmann Audio, a high-end manufacturer of top-of-the-line turntables and audio components.
LowSwing recordings are recorded and mixed analogue on tape and then cut directly to vinyl. Mastering doesn't use computers, digital mixes, or AD/DA conversions. The album uses LowSwing's unique collection of vintage equipment from the 1960s and 70s, many of which have been modified to suit their own requirements.
At the beginning of April 2023, British singer Fink and LowSwing Records' producer Guy Sternberg met to record a very special session. Over the span of two days together with a dream band of musicians — including bass hero Tim Lefebvre (most known from David Bowie's Black Star album) and drummer Earl Harvin (Tindersticks, Seal, Jeff Beck) — they recorded some of Fink's favorite tracks from Bowie and The Smiths, some classic choices by producer Guy Sternberg from Soundgarden and Little Feat, and a couple of Fink's own classic cuts.
As Fink later wrote: "The Session was the catalyst of musical desire...a few days in a real recording studio with some friends, stellar sessionistas, and nothing to think about apart from singing and playing."
The album was recorded and mixed at one of Berlin's oldest studios, Tritonus, where Nick Cave, Erasure, Element of Crime and many others made their records. The recording was done on 2-inch 24-track Studer A827 and was mixed down to a Studer A80 ½-inch machine at 30ips.
Later the record was mastered and cut to lacquer at George Martin's legendary AIR Studios in London.
Fink's The LowSwing Sessions is available exclusively on vinyl. Two editions will be released: a standard, single 33-RPM 140g disc and a "Deluxe" edition, limited to 1,000 copies and packaged in a luxurious gatefold cover and pressed on two 45-RPM discs. Both versions are pressed at Optimal Media GmbH.
This album is produced in co-operation with Brinkmann Audio, high-end manufacturer of the world's finest turntables and audio components.
