Mirrorball is a 1999 live album by Sarah McLachlan. Grafted from McLachlan's supremely satisfying 1998 performances, Mirrorball is drawn almost equally from the multiplatinum Surfacing and its superior predecessor, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. (Included also is the lovely "I Will Remember You".) Live, a haunting ballad such as "Possession" becomes a fevered, aggressive bit of psychedelia. "Hold On" reveals new depths when performed behind the beat with morphing time signatures and driving piano.
Malicious tongues claim that "Mirrorball" is nothing more than a series of the big hits from "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" and "Surfacing" in Live. Of course, this is only half the truth, because the live versions not only sound significantly different from the perfectly produced studio numbers, but also have a drive and an urgency that they easily miss. The anthem "I Will Remember You" has never sounded so haunting, "Ice Cream" has never been in such a good mood and with the first piano chords of "Angel" you can hear the audience screaming and then sinking into the depths of the music.
The live LP was a commercial success, entering top 3 on both Billboard 200 and Canadian Albums Chart. The live performance of "I Will Remember You" was re-released as a single (having previously released in 1995 and 1996) and was a commercial success, entering top 15 on both Billboard Hot 100 and Canadian Hot 100 charts. The live performance of "I Will Remember You" won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
The remastering for Analogue Productions offers a clear added value compared to the comparatively almost nervous version of Bernie Grundmann's original mastering. There is warmth and space in the sound and the restlessness, which is sometimes strenuous on high-quality systems, is banished.
