High Quality Pure Analogue 180g Vinyl LP!
The 8th studio album from The Doobie Brothers was released in 1978. The album was their first without Tom Johnston as a full-fledged member and would be the last to include Jeff "Skunk" Baster and John Hartman. Michael McDonald performs lead vocals on the title track and the hit song "What A Fool Believes" No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1979 which became the group's biggest hit. Patrick Simmons leads on the song "Depending On You".
Fatefully and anecdotally, the Doobie Brothers have become twinned without any blood relationship: The intoxicated and momentous sentence "We are all Doobie Brothers" is said to have been uttered at some point to the marijuana roll (Doobie) circling around and thus fraternally shared in the practice room. Meanwhile, co-founder Tom Johnston had a Motown-based sound in mind, with a bass line à la Seals & Crofts and Stevie Wonder-style vocals. The fact that "Minute By Minute" is the first album of the post-Johnston era to perfectly implement the mature style of the group is thanks in part to the two experienced former Steely Dan top executives Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter and singer Michael McDonald.
Subtle, mildly electrified groove embodies the guiding principle of this album. Comforting, highly colored, glittering sounds round off with powerful rhythms to warm sounds ("What A Fool Believes"). Over rolling piano chords on jagged bass, solo vocals and polyphonic backgrounds are layered into blissful harmony ("Here To Love You"). Well-tuned and perfectly served solos of lead guitar and sax are welcome extras that never drown out the captivating team management. Her triple platinum and Grammy trophy deserve so much brotherhood on record.
