Featured in Michael Fremer's Heavy Rotation in the February 2007 Issue of Stereophile!
Elvis Is Back, the first ever stereo album recording from the King, was cut and released within weeks of his discharge from the army, in 1960. Filled with classic R & B and rock standards, Elvis Is Back rode the Billboard album charts for more than a year - peaking at #2.
The elaborate freshness strategies ("A Date With Elvis" / RCA LPM-2011) and comforting perseverance slogans, with which the management of the Elvis community had sweetened the artistically unproductive military time of the king, were followed by the great coup. "Elvis Is Back" was the long-awaited enforcement announcement, which was expanded by the American radio and television stations into a major media event.
With the still warm certificate of dismissal in his luggage, Elvis went to the studio in March 1960 and recorded a number of later world hits such as "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "It's Now Or Never". While these cuddly songs caused a sensation as single releases, the LP shows Elvis' strengthened qualities as a rock, blues and gospel singer with numbers like "Dirty, Dirty Feeling", "Like A Baby" and "The Thrill Of Your Love". That his voice – despite all fears – had lost none of its tingling eroticism is proven by the master in "Fever", accompanied solely by bass and percussion.
In its stylistic diversity, this album represents one of the most ingenious throws of early Elvis, which was followed by nothing comparable before his big comeback in 1968 ("From Elvis In Memphis"/RCA LSP-4155).
