Eminem's 3rd Studio Album on Double Vinyl LP!
Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 145/500!
The Marshall Mathers LP is the third studio album by American rapper Eminem, released on May 23, 2000 by Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. The album was produced by Dr. Dre and Eminem, as well as The 45 King, the Bass brothers and Mel Man, and recorded in almost two months in several American studios. Compared to the musician's previous work, The Slim Shady LP, the album features more introspective lyrics — Marshall reflects on his rise to fame, critics of his songs and estrangement from his family and wife. The album is classified as "transgressive music" and combines songs in the genres of horror and hardcore hip-hop, as well as satirical tracks. Artists such as Dido, RBX, Sticky Fingaz, D12, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and Nate Dogg took part in the recording.
Like The Slim Shady LP, the record was surrounded by a halo of controversy and scandals after its release, at the same time further pushing Eminem to the forefront of American pop culture. The main reason for the controversy was the lyrics of songs that were considered "violent, homophobic, misogynistic", as well as containing references to the Columbine massacre. US Lady Lynn Cheney sharply criticized The Marshall Mathers LP for its lyrical content at a US Senate hearing, and the Canadian government even considered banning Marshall from entering Canada. Despite this, the record received recognition from music critics and listeners, who highly appreciated the artist's lyrics and called the work emotionally deep. The editors of Rolling Stone magazine named The Marshall Mathers LP the best album of 2000.
The Marshall Mathers LP topped the Billboard 200 chart and remained at the top for eight consecutive weeks. The album was even more commercially successful than the previous record, with 1.78 million copies sold in the first week, making it one of the fastest—selling studio albums in the United States. Several singles were released for the album: "The Real Slim Shady", "The Way I Am", "Stan", "I'm Back" and "Bitch Please II".
Numerous magazines and websites include The Marshall Mathers LP in the lists of the greatest albums of all time and is recognized as the best work in Eminem's career. The total number of copies sold worldwide was 25 million; The RIAA certified The Marshall Mathers LP as a "diamond" record. In 2001, the record won a Grammy for Best Rap Album and was nominated in the Album of the Year category, and the lead single "The Real Slim Shady" won in the Best Rap Solo Performance category. In 2013, the album received a "spiritual" sequel — The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
"Chris Rock joked that the world was so crazy, 'the best rapper is a white guy,' referring to Eminem. He'd been accused of corrupting the nation's youth by fostering misogyny on his major-label debut, and to say he doubled down on playing with offensive ideas only exaggerates his joyful commitment to earning more denunciations. 'The Real Slim Shady' and 'Bitch Please II' vaulted Eminem from a shock rapper with a sense of humor to the voice of a generation. And in 'Stan,' he created a verb and a meme to describe extreme fandom in our era." - Rolling Stone, The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
