At the beginning of the recording sessions, Michael Jackson was only clear about one thing: He didn't want to sound like The Jacksons. The late producer legend Quincy Jones did him this favor – the beginning of a collaboration that would shape almost two highly creative decades in Jackson's artistic discography.
Jackson was not the sole author of the furious tracklist: Stevie Wonder ("I Can't Help It"), Rod Temperton ("Rock With You") and Paul McCartney ("Girlfriend"), among others, participated in the songwriting. While "Girlfriend" was only able to place in the top 50 of the single charts in Europe on the island, the other two singles as well as "She's Out Of My Life", written by Tom Bahler, occupied high chart positions, especially in the UK and the USA. "Rock With You" and the song "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough", written by Jackson himself, were even able to establish themselves at the top of the US singles charts. The album, on the other hand, beat all records: To date, it has been certified platinum nine times (!) in the USA and sold a total of over 20 million units - the world's most successful album by a black artist to date.

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) technique bypasses generational losses inherent to the traditional three-step plating process by removing two steps: the production of father and mother plates, which are created to yield numerous stampers from each lacquer that is cut. For UD1S plating, stampers (also called "converts") are made directly from the lacquers. Since each lacquer yields only one stamper, multiple lacquers need to be cut. Mobile Fidelity's UD1S process produces a final LP with the lowest-possible noise floor. The removal of two steps of the plating process also reveals musical details and dynamics that would otherwise be lost due to the standard multi-step process. With UD1S, every aspect of vinyl production is optimized to produce the best-sounding vinyl album available today.
