There is something so alluring about Brazilian music: a suggestion of the tropical, the mysterious, and the sensual. And there is the Portuguese language, where a simple turn of phrase, a halting silence, the cool articulation of a vowel sound can summon forth feelings that require no translation.
"Entre Amigos" is highly coveted among audiophile record collectors. This is not only due to the excellent sound of this recording. The album was critically acclaimed and the LP version has been out of print since 2010. Even though most of the titles on "Entre Amigos" come from the pen of the bossa nova father Jobim and songs like "Insensatez", "Desafinado" or "Garota De Ipanema" have already been covered a thousand times, the collaboration between the Brazilian singer Rosa Passo and the jazz bassist legend Ron Carter does not move on the usual bossa floor: The extremely sparsely instrumented songs, freed from stylistic dross, are emotional, sensual and mysterious.
Singer Rosa Passos and bassist Ron Carter have recreated Brazilian music in their own image. Entre Amigos is a front row seat right by Ron Carter's big, woody upright bass as he uses his singing sound, big percussive beat and uncanny harmonic sensibility to complement the come-hither bossa artistry of the inimitable Rosa Passos.
Ron Carter, gentleman as he is, is completely at home and leaves the stage to Passos. Even if this seems a bit inappropriate in the context of the quiet tones: Rosa Passos sings spectacularly, with enormous presence and thus leaves the songs no chance to drift into the superficial or to develop an elevator mentality. By the way, the production was taken over by the legendary David Chesky. The sound is vivid and extremely airy. You feel like you're sitting right next to Carter's acoustic bass, while the filigree percussion accompanies Passo's involving vocals.
Chesky Records now presents "Entre Amigos" as a limited and numbered reissue for Record Store Day UK – on high-quality 180 gram white vinyl (33 rpm). 500 units are planned for the British market, and 1,000 more units will be sent out into the world.
