Sonny Clark Project

More than 15 years ago, "Jazz from Greece" still flew under the radar of the experts. This is no longer the case: The Greek jazz scene is growing, thriving and bringing truly wonderful blossoms to light. Just think of the great releases of Petros Klampanis or Stravos Lantsias. The "Sonny Clark Project" is a jazz ensemble dedicated to the interpretation and appreciation of the works of the renowned American hard bop pianist and composer Sonny Clark. The project aims to honor Clark's legacy by performing his compositions and making his music accessible to contemporary audiences. Sonny Clark, who was an important figure in the hard bop movement of the 1950s and 1960s and worked with notable artists such as John Coltrane, Art. Farmer and Grant Green, contributed to numerous recordings that are now recognized standards.
Clark's compositions are known for their complex melodies and elaborate harmonies, which makes them a rich source of inspiration for modern jazz musicians – including Stjepko Gut (trumpet), Dimos Dimitriadis (alto saxophone), George Kontrafouris (piano), Olivier Gatto (bass) and Keith Copeland (drums), who succeed in breathing a breath of fresh air into Clark's music without distorting the essence of his compositions. The excellent-sounding re-release of the Ikaros Music LP from 2020 is not only a must for all fans of Sonny Clark - it is predestined to introduce new generations of listeners to the work of the brilliant musician.
The record label of the "Hellenic Jazz Society" began operations in June 2024 - with the aim of producing high-fidelity albums of the local jazz scene. The steady rise of the Greek jazz scene has led "HJS" to promote talented Greek musicians at home and abroad. All albums of the Hellenic Jazz Society are recorded and pressed according to high quality standards - with 180 gram heavy vinyl and high-quality printed gatefold sleeves.
