When this album lands on the turntables in 1977, João Gilberto, Nestor and godfather of bossa nova, has long enjoyed legendary merits for his life's work, which is far from complete. His straightforward, sometimes dry and scratchy vocals reverberate unmistakably in the mezzopiano and shape his very personal style of Latin jazz with an intercontinental reach. With Wave, Triste, Caminhos Cruzados and Zingaro, he combines four glamorous titles by his congenial compatriot Antônio Carlos Jobim on this LP.
How universally Gilberto's bossa mixtures can be used is shown by Gershwin's hit "S Wonderful", which he completely reinterprets. Instead of the roaring original, an independent new version of the musical classic is created, pleasantly free of dynamic effects and filled with wide-awake declamation. The question of whether the tried-and-tested set of guitar and subtly working rhythm section would have managed without the juicy string sound answers itself on closer listening: Claus Ogerman's arrangements are less colourful staffage than systematically woven playing with internal and counter-voices. A select team of instrumentalists works here, carrying the melancholic mood of this music on their fingertips, as it were.
