Earl "Chico" Freeman was one of the leading modern tenor saxophonists in the 1970s, having his roots in the jazz tradition. He recorded for independent labels such as India Navigation, was most prolific between 1976 and 1981 and is still active today.
"Spirit Sensitive" (1979) meant a change of direction for the otherwise free and avant-garde Chico: a selection of standards, almost exclusively ballads. As the title of the album suggests, Freeman interprets the familiar compositions with clear and full tone, paired with the powerful bass of Cecil McBee pushing itself to the fore. The drums are sparse and add texture, while John Hicks' piano colors and completes the musical space. The album is rounded off by Billy Hart and Famoudou Don Moye on drums.
