After leaving a strong impression on Japanese jazz fans with his three albums released from Venus Records in the late 1990s, Archie Shepp returned with this smash hit in 2001. Also known as French Ballads in Japan, this album consists entirely of French songs and songs associated with France, where Shepp had resided for many years.
In this collection of romantic French melodies, also known in Japan as "French Ballads", published in 2001, Archie Shepp refers to his adopted home of France, which has been his home for several years. Although this recording is very emotional, the avant-gardist Shepp rejects the "sugar-sweet sentimentality" and brings tension into his playing, which also includes lively pieces such as "L'Ame Des Poetes" or "April in Paris".
The program includes "Deja Vu," an original composition by Shepp, as well as the ubiquitous "Les Feuilles Mortes" ("Autumn Leaves") and attractive "Sous Le Ciel De Paris" ("Under the Paris Skies").
Venus LPs are pressed only once. After the first edition has been sold, the titles will be removed from the catalogue. Collectors should therefore consider buying in good time.
