Barney Wilen Quintet Guilde Du Jazz J-1239-1957
In 1957, at the age of 20, French saxophonist Barney Wilen recorded his first album as a leader: "The Barney Wilen Quintet" for the US label Guilde du Jazz/Jazztone with the number J-1239. Since Barney was signed to the French label Vogue at the time, this record was not widely distributed in France. Nevertheless, his career took a big leap in the same year when Miles Davis brought him in to record the soundtrack to the Louis Malle film "Elevator to the Scaffold".
Thanks to Sam Records, there is now the chance to enjoy this debut – in audiophile quality and in Sam's usual high-quality presentation. Wilen is accompanied by Hubert Fol (alto saxophone), Nico Buninck (piano), Lloyd Thompson (bass) and Al Levitt (drums), who have played with big names such as Django Reinhardt, Lester Young and Charles Mingus.
