Limited Edition Vinyl LP!
Reissue, originally released in 1962. Bossa Nova Soul Samba came as Ike Quebec's best contribution to the fruitful marriage between jazz and Brazilian music. Recorded in 1962 and released on Blue Note in the same year, this was Quebec's final recording before his death in January 1963. A beautiful studio session dominated by Quebec's tenor sax warm tone and the light and gentle groove provided by Kenny Burrell (guitar), Wendell Marshall (bass), Willie Bobo (drums) and Garvin Masseaux (chekere).
Ike Quebec never achieved the superstar status of some of his colleagues on the BlueNote label. His musical style on the tenor saxophone was not individual enough for that and his lifestyle with massive drug abuse was probably too erratic. He performed frequently as a session player, bringing Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell to Blue Note. Shortly before his death from lung cancer in 1962, however, he recorded a memorable album and took part in the Bossa Nova Mania that was taking place without any Brazilian players.
Ike Quebec on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Wendell Marshall on bass, Willie Bobo on drums and Garvin Masseaux beat and shake the chekere, which is less known as a jazz instrument, play extremely sensitively.
