John Coltrane brought a new sound and style to jazz, and he applied it in his own unique way to the standard material of the storehouse of American music gathered from Broadway, Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley.
On July 11, 1958, when he recorded "Standard Coltrane", John Coltrane preferred familiar and unknown melodies from his youth and sought new structures and inspiration in them. The album, released in 1962, was recorded for Prestige Records with trumpeter Wilbur Harden, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Coltrane's groundbreaking modal post-bob of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" was still in the future. Instead, a ten-minute version of the "Invitation" standard can be heard.
The remastering for Analogue Productions was done by Kevin Gray at his Coherent Audio Studios.
