"Europe, here we come!" This rousing concert by the Dave Brubeck Quartet at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw on 26 February 1958 marks the start of a great career in Europe. Since its founding in 1951, the quartet around pianist Dave Brubeck and saxophonist Paul Desmond had already earned a stunning reputation overseas, Brubeck even graced the cover of Time Magazine in 1954. Legend has it that Duke congratulated Ellington and Brubeck replied, "It should have been you."
One of the most famous tracks on this album is a dedication to Ellington, entitled "The Duke". An interpretation of the standard "These Foolish Things", which had made Ella Fitzgerald famous, can be heard as well as the Disney classic "Somdeday, My Prince Will Come", which served as the title for Miles Davis' album released three years later. Together with Eugene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums, an exciting, flowing session was created, which can now be enjoyed in the best mono sound quality.
Even though the tape came to a standstill before the end of the last piece "Take the "A" Train", the makers of "The Lost Recordings" decided to release the concert in order to preserve this great piece of art for posterity.
