The two outstanding Belgian jazz guitarists Philip Catherine and Nicolas Fiszman (also on bass) played a celebrated concert in the west of Berlin as part of the Jazzbühne Festival on the evening of June 13, 1982. In the morning they played the same set in East Berlin – the two different worlds made a lasting impression on the musicians.
The audience was also impressed: they were offered a masterful concert, which was rewarded with thunderous applause. What the listener can hardly believe about the well-constructed and polyphonic pieces: The musicians improvised in large parts, as Catherine explains: "Nothing is written from beginning to end. I compose the themes and some harmonious bridges. Then we have a chord table... And that's it." Inspiration, taste, imagination and friendship formed the basis. Catherine worked with many big names from the jazz scene, such as Charles Mingus, Chet Baker or Stéphane Grapelli, while Fiszman played with Sing, Charles Aznavour or Vanessa Paradis.
