The recently-deceased Nina Simone singing at her passionate best on this 1967 release. This is a tremendous artist accurately reproducing native blues in a most compelling fashion. There are no mannerisms. Affectation never enters the picture. There is no hiding behind big bands, studied arrangements or audio effects. Miss Simone simply sings - with heart at all times, with guts on certain tunes and with abandon on everything.
In social and private life, Nina Simone always knew exactly what she didn't want. Sometimes she lamented about the lousy erotic qualities of her lovers, then the audience got their fat. Other times she cancelled appearances without further ado and scolded the show business. In music, rooted in gospel, she sought the middle ground between jazz and pop until she crowned the rock fans in the sixties as the High Priestess of Soul (LP title).
In its undisputed most productive phase, the present blues album was also created, which pays homage to the currents of the time neither with a massive line-up nor with clinking electrification. Instead, simone's simply beautiful alto wraps itself in delicate organ sounds and heartily pulsating, but by no means stomping rhythms.
The rather sober title "Sings The Blues" is here a promise of crackling tension and ruthless authenticity of the genre, which for every black artist means the beginning and at the same time the completion of all music. Thus, the reissue of the original is likely to mark the life's work of the diva on the occasion of her 70th birthday in February and sudden death in April 2003 more insistently than any compilation, no matter how conscientiously compiled.
