The saxophonist Charles Brackeen is joined by Charlie Haden, Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell.
On this record, little-known Charles Brackeen brings his saxophone to a party hosted by the majority of the members of Ornette Coleman's band. As you might expect, while Brackeen certainly holds his own, it is Coleman's boys who drive events forward and group around Brackeen's muscular alto saxophone as if they were welcoming a new gang member. Haden's bass playing provides the hectic pulse, here and there he leaves the stage to Blackwell's movable drums and gets out completely to create rolling sounds by playing his instrument with the bow. Brackeen and Cherry are in the competition on this solid foundation, with results that are often surprising and never less than exciting.
