Miles Davis Quintet Miles Smiles

Apart from a live performance at the Portland Festival, the Miles Davis discography for 1966 only contains the recordings for the LP "Miles Smiles"! Quite unusual, if you think of the otherwise large output of Miles and his formations for Columbia in the 60s.
Bassist Ron Carter best met the needs for the difficult rhythm part and remained Miles' 'Number One' in a quintet that unconventionally reinterpreted the compositions of Wayne Shorter, but also jazz hits such as "Freedom Jazz Dance" by Eddie Harris or the "Gingerbread Boy" by Jimmy Heath.
Each of the nine minutes of Shorter's composition "Footprints" are real highlights, but also the drum work of the young Tony Williams in "Freedom Jazz Dance" is full of dynamics, with a high pulse and is even described as »threatening« in the liner notes. Anthony Tuttle doesn't call the music 'New Stream' – not 'Old Guard' but good, modern jazz – and that was Miles Smiles when it was released 40 years ago, but that's still the LP today! And that Miles Davis is said to have smiled for once when he enjoyed the excellent interaction of the five individualists is certainly not a rumor.
