180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl! Pressed at Pallas in Germany!
This impressive 180g vinyl recording by Stan Getz contains seven tunes such as "Lush Life" and "Five Hundred Miles High".
A notable aspect of Stan Getzs' 1972 masterpiece is the album's consistently organic sound. The band that accompanies Getz on these recordings for Columbia consists of Chick Corea, electric bassist Stanley Clarke (who also plays in Corea's band Return To Forever), drummer Tony Williams and Brazilian percussion master Airto. With the exception of Clarke, all of them had already played with Miles Davis in the then still experimental electric bands. Corea's style in "Return To Forever" was just about to leave its base of fusion sound, Wiliams played with John McLaughlin and Larry Young just had the peak of his time with Miles Davis with "Lifetime".
But that's not to distract from the fact that we're dealing with an album by Stan Getz. His outstanding playing on the tenor saxophone shows this. Lively and fluid, he plays to the difficult variations that Corea sings in his mixture of Latin carnival in "La Fiesta" and skilfully completes the change of form in the changes of keys in "Five Hundred Miles High". The foundation of the music of "Return to Forever" came from Stan Getzs' extensive complex harmonies and consistent devotion to musical improvisation. Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" forms the space where Stan Getz introduces the band to the dynamics, the overall sound and the ambient atmosphere - and clarke gets him to stroke his bass with the bow. These musicians combine the restlessness of electric jazz with the firm principles supported by Getz that have led modern jazz to its greatness. Tension and mutual respect flow from the speakers in every recording. This is especially true of the Latin-style play "Captain Marvel," the most beautiful shot Getz made in the 1970s.
