Chet Baker Quartet Chet Baker Quartet Mono
This session was recorded on Monday, October 24, 1955, between 2 and 9 p.m. at the Pathe Maggellan Studio in Paris. On October 24, only Jimmy Bond was still with Chet: Peter Littman had returned to America and his place was recently taken by Nils-Bertil 'Bert' Dahlander, a Swedish drummer who had accompanied Lars Gullin. On the keyboard was an almost unknown pianist named Gérard Gustin, whom Eddie Barclay had just signed. Due to these connections, the band were forced to fall back on standards - these Chet could play better than anyone else. He chose eight tracks: "These Foolish Things", which remained in the quartet's repertoire for a while, and five others that the trumpeter plays here for the first time: "There's a Small Hotel", "Autumn in New York", "Summertime", "You Go To My Head" and "Tenderly", as well as another two - "I'll Remember April" and "Lover Man" - which he had played less than ten days earlier with Lars Gullin and Dick Twardzik, whose disappearance Chet did not yet want to accept. Under these circumstances, the whole session exudes a certain sadness that cannot be hidden, no matter in which key or at what tempo.
Never before has Chet sounded as moving as during "You Go To My Head".
