180g Vinyl Pressed At Quality Record Pressings!
Mastered by Bernie Grundman From The Original Analog Tapes!
Winner of the 1969 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group!
As mentioned many times elsewhere, this album occupies a unique place in the Bill Evans discography. It is the only album that documents drummer Jack deJohnette's much too short stay in the trio. The trio's performance on this album earned them the 1969 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
When this set was recorded in Montreux on June 15, 1968, Eddie Gomez and Evans played together for two years. Gomez had a different virtuosity than Scott LaFaro in Evans' classical trio five years earlier, but he was clearly the best bass player Evans had worked with since LaFaro's tragic death. The groove between the two was profound and at the same time pleasant, so comfortable that Evans did something in this set that he had never done before, at least on one recording: he put Gomez in the foreground for an entire track, the almost seven-minute long "Embraceable You".
As Gene Lees' liner notes describe, Evans' performance at the renowned jazz festival in the nightclub of the Montreux Casino, one of Switzerland's hippest resorts, was one of his best. He and Gomez played with more exuberance, more joie de vivre and more drive. Evans' brooding, introspective musical side had long been represented on records; the positive side has not been heard enough, but it is here on this album.
At the end of each number, the audience exploded with applause, which was so stormy and extended that it had to be heavily edited for the album.
Enjoy this sparkling Bill Evans piano performance, made even more delightful by Bernie Grundman's professional mastering from the original analog tape. For this edition, there can only be the best vinyl pressing - a super-quiet, noble-sounding record from Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's best-sounding LPs.

As the liner notes by Gene Lees reveal, Evans's performance at the renowned jazz festival in the nightclub of the Montreux Casino, one of the most fashionable resorts in Switzerland, was one of his best. He and Gomez played with more exuberance, more happiness and more drive. Evans' brooding, introspective musical side has been represented well on records before; the bright side has been too-little heard, but it's here in this album.
