180g Vinyl Plated & Pressed at Quality Record Pressings!
Mastered from the Original Analog Tape by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio!
TAS Rated 4/5 Music, 4/5 Sonics in the November 2015 Issue of The Absolute Sound!
"Diamonds And Rust in the Bullring" was originally released on vinyl in a small edition, but this wonderful recording with fantastic sound deserves the remastering that Kevin Gray has now done for Analogue Productions. In 1988, Joan Baez sang a concert in the bullring of the Basque city of Bilbao: a mixture of English and Spanish titles that delighted the audience.
The first part of the recording consists of well-known hits by artist friends, such as the audiophile classic "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Leonard Cohen. In the second half, she performs songs in Spanish, including an interpretation of Sting's "They Dance Alone (Gueca Solo)", which here is called "Ellas Danzan Solas". However, Baez's version of "Txoria Txori", a Basque folk song that is sung along by the audience as if in unison, is particularly touching. Her duet with Mercedes Sosa, "Diamonds & Rust", is also one of the highlights of the album.
A very difficult-to-find LP, originally released on a small, independent label. Originally released on a very limited run of vinyl. The original LPs are demanding a nice price on the Asian market. A beautiful recording with absolutely fantastic sound. Includes a performance of her hit song "Diamonds and Rust" as well as the audiophile classic "Famous Blue Raincoat." This may be an under-the-radar title, but it's a can't miss for the discerning audiophile.
The album chronicles a show performed by Baez in a bullring, naturally, in Bilbao, Spain, in 1988, and it demonstrates what makes her such a draw overseas. Half of the collection consists of songs sung in Spanish.
"This record was made in a bullring in Bilbao, Spain, in 1988. It is dedicated to the Mayor and the people pf Bilbao, who came out between thunderstorms to see me perform. The song in (Euskara) TXORIA TXORI is about a sweet little bird...I want to thank Pasku who taught it to me, and thank the Bilbao public for singing it so beautifully." — Joan Baez.
Illustrations by Joan Baez; additional vocals Mercedes Sosa.
"... this Analogue Productions release captures an impassioned performance with much-better-than-expected sonics. ... Impeccably mastered from the original analog tape by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, the 180-gram vinyl was plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings. This small treasure preserves the essence of what makes Baez such a beloved figure on the world stage." - Neil Gader, The Absolute Sound, November 2015, Music 4/5, Sonics 4/5
