Tim Collins is certainly not a blank slate: The American drummer and vibraphonist studied at Ithaca College under marimba luminary Gordon Stout. His path as a leader, sideman and studio musician has already brought him together with the likes of Antonio Sanchez, John Ellis, Ben Monder, Joel Frahm, Donny McCaslin and many more. On his numerous tours in Europe, he repeatedly met a musician who is also constantly on tour: Mulo Francel (tenor saxophone, bass and double bass clarinet) from Quadro Nuevo – multiple winner of the ECHO and German Jazz Award. The two musicians, who have the reputation of being absolute masters of their craft, arranged to meet for the popular "Jazz-on-Vinyl" series, which is now entering its tenth round, to play chamber music duos: "How Did We Get Here?" is the result of this summit meeting – music at the very highest level!
Swinging jazz, romantic ballads and adventurous improvisations on their own compositions, which also take up elements from neo-classical and minimal music - on "How Did We Get Here?", the two extravagant artists refuse any pigeonholing and celebrate an immensely exciting and inspired "Come together". The immediate, organic sound that has established the reputation of the "Jazz on Vinyl" releases is in no way inferior to the artistic repertoire value of "Vol. 10". The production of "How Did We Get Here?" was created in co-production with GLM Music. Sound engineer Dominique Klatte relied on his proven recipe: The high-quality microphone signals in the studio were left completely natural and not processed in terms of frequency or space. The result: an extraordinarily direct, blunt listening experience in living room acoustics.
"Jazz on Vinyl" is the project of the busy label owner Dominique Klatte. The dedicated sound engineer has been releasing purely analogue jazz albums since 2017 – without any digital technology in the signal path. Always on the lookout for the optimal analogue sound experience and with attention to detail, Klatte produces recordings that score with great liveliness and do not compromise in terms of audiophile. He sometimes uses a parish hall, living room or the library in his home town of Erding near Munich as recording locations.
