When David was four years old, his father bought a violin for his older brother. David took interest and soon learned to play. At the age of five, he won first prize in his first competition. By the age of seven, he was playing once a week in public and studied violin at the Lubeck Conservatoire.
Garrett studied one semester at the Royal College of Music in London at the age of 17.
