Jascha Heifetz was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, violinists of the 20th century. On this recording, he plays Tchaikovsky's violin concertos with such a degree of intimacy and enthusiasm as perhaps only he could. Tchaikovsky's work was initially considered unplayable, which devastated the Russian composer. Leopold Auer, of all people, one of Heifetz's great virtuosos and later teacher, refused the premiere of the concertos. It was not until three years after this rejection that Adolf Brodsky took up the composition and Auer revised his opinion.
