The German Choir & Orchestra of Berlin conducted by Eugen Jochum and featuring soprano Gundula Janowitz, tenor, Gerhard Stolze and baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. This Limited Edition 180g LP is brought to you by the people responsible for the Decca reissue series. A sonic & musical masterpiece! A combination of the best recording & performance. Wow!
The present recording of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana", composed in 1935/36 with renowned vocal soloists under the overall direction of the legendary Eugen Jochum, was authorized by Orff himself. It thus represents a special feature among the countless recordings of these secular songs with a unique combination of instruments that have appeared on the market. This version, created in 1967 in the UFA Studios in Berlin, should therefore come very close to Carl Orff's demands on his work.
The recording clearly shows that Orff did not intend a mere setting of the medieval texts, which he left in the original language, but tried to express moods musically. Orff's compositional style, which is strongly determined by rhythm, determines the sometimes archaic character of the songs. Vital elemental power can be experienced in the impressive interpretation. But the inscrutability of fate also comes into its own in contrasting delicately lyrical passages.
Supported by a balanced and precise sound technique, Orff's homage to the Middle Ages - in which wine, woman and song, spring and love are closely linked to the wheel of fate - takes the listener into the musical world of Carmina Burana.
