180 Gram Virgin Vinyl! High Quality Pressing!
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Istvan Kertesz (conductor). Kertesz's approach is as simple and straightforward as could be, yet the hushed intensity of the playing conveys a depth of feeling that makes one hear the music with new ears. There is plenty of excitement and the Vienna Philharmonic plays the Largo most beautifully.
In Dvorák's last symphony, premiered in New York in 1893, the composer's many years of experience with classical forms are fulfilled. This work owes its unbroken popularity to this day to its finely structured orchestration and thematic inventions, which were consistently borrowed from various American folk songs, including spirituals.
Translating Dvorák's score into sound has always been one of the challenges for the orchestra and recording team. In the present recording with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of István Kertész, it has been possible in an exemplary way to capture the primal force of the heavy brass as well as the indulgent string movement and lyrical solo parts on sound carriers. Highest musicality of the performers, combined with tonal perfection, give this recording from the early days of stereophony the rank of a historical sound document, which has no competition to fear in the abundance of recordings of this symphony.
