Beethoven's only violin concerto is indisputably one of the most beautiful works ever written for this instrument. As a thoroughly symphonically conceived piece, which impresses primarily with its lyrical expressive characters, it belongs to the repertoire of all great violinists. From the multitude of recordings often painted with a broad brush and interpreted excessively sentimentally, this DGG production from 1962 stands out pleasantly. With delicate, comforting timbre and perfect tone purity, the soloist Schneiderhan lets the spirit of the score breathe. In keeping with this captivating sound poetry, the Berliner Philharmoniker reveal a sound scenario that is second to none: Gently swaying string carpet, finely balanced woodwind substitutes and soft-sounding, abysmal black double basses exude that consecration and peaceful transfiguration that have earned this concert the reputation of what has never been achieved again for two centuries.
In the conservation of the epochal work, the sound engineers have achieved a brilliant performance, because this recording is unmistakably one of the best sound of what the DGG range of the sixties has to offer.
