High-Quality Pure Analogue 180g Vinyl LP!
Malicious tongues predicted the end of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band when guitar virtuoso Mike Bloomfield left the band to form Electric Flag. In fact, however, the ensemble expanded, including a brass section, which provided a jazzier touch, while the Chicago blues was retained as the basis. Elvin Bishop became the new lead guitarist and gave the album its title with his nickname. Butterfield himself played harmonica and sang as his band grew into one of the most cohesive formations of its time.
Butterfield's best-known song One More Heartache opens the album, now without a doubt a blues-rock classic with a great harmonica and an infectious beat driven by the top-notch horns. Driftin' &
Driftin' is another well-known track and drags on for over nine minutes, with the horns sobbing and sighing while Sanborn shines with a solo in the choruses. In addition to cover versions by B. T. Jones (Born Under A Bad Sign), Otis
Rush (Double Trouble) and Roosevelt Sykes (Drivin' Wheel), two tracks by Butterfield are also represented, Run Out Of Time and the somewhat psychedelic Tollin' Bells, where Bishop's guitar and Naftalin's floating keyboard evoke a haunting feeling.
The stunning pastiche cover, a nod to the flower power era of the time, completes the release that ushered in a new phase of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's career that would last for a long time.
