The musicians are aiming high with their desire for a Super Session, for it's not something that can be planned. Only when the time, place and audience play along, when one's lucky star is shining brightly, and the musicians have a good day, then one of music's great moments might be captured on tape. Not forgetting the recording technicians who also have to be in the mood. In 1968 this all happened to be the case with the majority of the nine numbers on this Columbia LP. All in all, one must consider the numbers with Stephen Stills as most successful in the sense of a session because here each musician inspires the others. In the super session with Kooper and Bloomfield, the guitarist stands in the limelight while the other musicians back him up.
"Super session" – a high standard that the musicians set for themselves. You can't plan something like that, only when place, time and audience play along, when the stars are favorable and when the musicians catch a great day, real great moments of music are recorded. Not to forget: The sound engineer must also be in the mood!
For most of the nine tracks on the Columbia LP, this was true in 1968: "Season Of The Witch" (composed by Donovan) in this version is one of them, including "You Don't Love Me" and the Dylan classic "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry". Overall, you have to consider the titles with Steve Stills in the sense of a session as more successful, because here the meeting leads to real cross-fertilization. In the super session of Kooper with Bloomfield, the guitarist is pushed to the front of the stage and the rest of the musicians accompany him.
The three soloists often manage to capture the grandiose moments from their own formations (Al Kooper's Blood, Sweat & Tears; Mike Bloomfield's Electric Flag and Steven Stills' Buffalo Springfield). The album was rightly named one of the best releases of the year by Rolling Stone in 1968. An award that was quite right and still has its justification today. A purchase recommendation to listen to is this in any case.
